Bed bug treatment in Breda: recognising the signs
An adult bed bug is flat, reddish-brown and roughly the size of an apple pip. By day it hides; at night it is drawn to your body heat to feed on blood. Because they hide so well, you usually find the traces first:
- itchy bites, often in a line or cluster on arms, neck or back
- tiny black dots in the seams of the mattress and the bed frame
- small blood spots on pillowcases or sheets
- pale brown shed skins in cracks around the bed
- a sweetish, musty smell with a heavy infestation
Not everyone reacts to bites, so bed bugs can be present even if nobody has bumps.
How bed bugs get into your home
Bed bugs have nothing to do with hygiene. They travel in suitcases, rucksacks and clothing after a stay in a hotel, hostel or holiday let, and they sometimes come with second-hand beds, sofas or bedside tables. They can also arrive with guests or from a neighbouring flat, along pipes and cracks in the wall.
Once inside, they settle close to where someone sleeps or sits for long periods: in the bed frame, behind the headboard, under skirting boards and in plug sockets. A sofa that someone regularly sleeps on is another well-known hiding place.
How our heat treatment works
During the inspection we check the bed, mattress, furniture, skirting and adjoining rooms. That tells us how far the bed bugs have spread and which rooms need treatment. Beforehand you receive clear instructions: what to wash, what to bag up and what to leave exactly where it is.
For the treatment itself we bring the affected room and its contents up to a temperature that bed bugs and their eggs cannot survive. Where necessary we also treat cracks and seams. After a while we come back for a check, because a single survivor could otherwise start a new infestation.
What not to do if you find bed bugs
It is natural to want them gone as fast as possible, but some reactions make things worse. Do not move to the sofa or another bedroom for a while: the bed bugs will follow you and spread through the house. Do not simply put your mattress out on the street, or someone else will take the problem home. And skip the insect spray, which only drives them deeper into cracks.
Are the bites mostly around the ankles, and do you have a dog or cat? Then it may be something else, so read our page on flea treatment too. Not sure? A sharp photo, or a specimen in a sealed bag, helps us identify it.
Avoiding bed bugs after a trip
After treatment, you will not want a repeat. A few habits help:
- In a hotel, keep your suitcase on the luggage rack, not on the bed or floor.
- When you get home, check the seams and compartments of your luggage, ideally outside the bedroom.
- Wash travel clothes at 60 degrees or more, or give them a long run in the tumble dryer.
- Inspect second-hand furniture carefully before it comes into your home.
Do you let rooms or manage a building with changing occupants? Then regular checks are a sensible part of pest control in Breda: the sooner you find bed bugs, the smaller the job.
